PVC Water Service Repairs

In many of the outlying areas of north San Diego County, water pressure can exceed 300psi.  Whenever water pressure is more than 125psi it becomes virtually impossible to cause PVC plastic repairs to hold permanently.  Most repairs will fail immediately at 150-200psi, even after a few hours of “curing.’’  We’ve witnessed service lines holding for a few days, weeks, even months and then blowing unexpectedly when a surge occurs.

The only way to eliminate this problem is to install a pressure regulator at the water company’s meter.  For those who have groves and/or large irrigation needs, a multi-range pressure regulator can be used to enable pressures above 75psi, but below the critical 125psi point.  Actually, it is possible to increase the pressure slightly higher, after a few weeks of use at a lower level.   Be advised when using a pressure regulator at the meter, it is still advisable to continue to have a separate regulator at the dwelling, to protect the house plumbing in case of failure of the meter regulator, or in the case of multi-range units, to ensure pressure to the house plumbing never exceeds 75psi.
